I dare to assume that benching 100kg (~220lb) is presumably the most common goal among gym goers, as it is seen as the ultimate token of body strength. Naturally, it has also been my goal, although I never saw it as realistic to reach anytime soon when I started taking things seriously again a few months ago.
Yet, contrary to my beliefs, I did reach this goal earlier this year, though not even close to being able to rep it. And after life decided to make this year the worst one of my life, with its most notable effects in the gym being a break in workouts and weight loss, I was happy just to be able to barely press 80kg.
A few days ago, after a brutal but consistent workout period (yet not having been near the bench in weeks), I had a sudden urge to see if I might be able to bench 100kg again. That day, I hit a new PR of 110kg fairly easily.
Emboldened by this mental PR, I decided to run an experiment today to see how many reps I could actually press with 100kg. Unexpectedly, it led to me completing three sets of 5-6 reps.
It still feels surreal, considering where I started, when I started, and what I went through mentally and physically this year. To be able to use 100kg as my working set weight from now on certainly wasn't on my bingo card for this year (among many other things).
